Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna was the youngest daughter of the Russian Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna. On his mother Olga has been associated with virtually all the Royal families of Europe. Together with his brothers and sister, she received an excellent education. They are fluent in Russian, French, Danish and German languages, studied literature, mathematics, history and art. In the Imperial family, all the children studied painting, but soon Olga began to do it professionally.

Rare photo of Grand Duchess Olga’s family
From left to right: Agnet (the first wife of Tikhon, Olga’s eldest son); Grand Duchess Olga herself; Gury (the second son of Olga); Leonid (Gury’s son); Ruth (Gury’s first wife); Xenia (Gury’s daughter); Nikolai Kulikovski (second husband of Olga). The photo was taken in Ballerup, Denmark in 1945. In 1948 the family will leave for Toronto.

The men could not believe that the Tsar’s sister was a simple hospital nurse. “Which sister bandaged your wounds?” the head surgeon asked one man. “That snub-nosed little one over there,” he replied, painting towards Olga. The surgeon looked rather uncomfortable but Olga “laughed gaily at the wounded soldier’s ingenuous designation”. Another man sat with tears trickling down his cheeks after Olga’s identity was confirmed by the doctor.
